How Hot are You for Him?
Wow - don't we just serve an awesome God? This
weekend once again God really just touched me in a very special
way and let me know He's there and how much He loves me - and reminding
me to go full out for Him or not bother at all...
I thought of an analogy like this - being a
Christian is like touching a stove - if the stove plate is off -
you can touch it all you like and it won't have any effect - you
can put food on it, plastic, metal, whatever...and there'll be no
effect whatsoever... That's a cold Christianity!
Lukewarm Christianity is like when the stove
is turned on, but to a very low or mediocre heat - you can touch
the plate for a while but after a time it becomes a bit too hot
and you have to pull away for a bit. Then after a second or two
your hand is fine and you can touch it for a while more - every
now and then the heat takes effect. You might counsel one person
or lead someone to Christ or go for a week without missing quiet
times or whatever, but the results are few and far between and inevitably
you cool off and are ineffective for the most part.
If you try make food on a low heat eventually
eventually (yes I meant to have the word twice...for emphasis) you
might get the food to a heat you want, but by taking so long to
cook it it will generally not taste nice (not in my experience anyway
- cook so slow and you'll end up doing more harm than good). Live
a lukewarm life for Christ and you'll make some difference, but
on the whole your life won't have much effect on your world around
you and so what? Little bits of good here and there but not much
that's lasting, not much that has real flavour attached...
But when you get a stove plate that's been turned
on full blast, you don't even have to touch it to feel the effects
- even putting your hand near it you will know that it's on and
you will not be able to get close without being deeply affected
by the heat. If you actually touch the effect you'll be burnt and
there'll undoubtedly be a blister very soon - definite effect and
sign of the burning that will last for a while. In the same way,
if you are fully "switched on" for Jesus - if you are
100% ALL OR NOTHING or at least aiming at that, then people will
be affected just by being near you and the closer they get to you
the more their lives will be effected and those who you touch /speak
to /encourage /rebuke / challenge will bear a mark - the mark/effect
of Jesus on their lives.
Lukewarm is compromising - there's no commitment
or at least no lasting commitment - touch the plate, gets too hot,
move away from the plate and so on... But being on fire (literally/figuratively)
means being definitively changed - Food that gets placed on a hot
stove will undergo change and will (hopefully depending on your
cooking prowess but assuming you know what you're doing) become
more like what it is intended to be and ready for consumption.
We are the stove plate - Jesus is the heat -
without having Jesus covering us and all that we do - EVERY sector
of our lives - we will have no effect on a world that is deeply
in need of a Saviour...
Having Jesus covering us sometimes and then
sometimes-not will not have a long-lasting effect either - may make
some difference but ultimately it will be like we were never on
at all cos any seeming results will probly not last too long...
Having Jesus burning at the forefront of our
lives will change things - us, people, the world around us...
Sometimes when I see how stupid I and others
around me get in this regard I just want to laugh - how far we miss
the boat - how much emphasis we put on stuff here and let the things
that really matter take back seat - but sometimes it makes me want
to cry and just shout out - "WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING? (exactly
as it says) YOU ARE WASTING YOUR TIME - STOP BEING SUCH A DORK AND
START BEING JESUS!!!
So what kind of stove plate are you looking
like at the moment - one or two of you are totally missing the boat
and haven't even been switched on yet - there is a God that loves
you so much that He wants YOU to be an integral part of His plan
- all you need to do is call on His name and allow Him to take away
your sin, allow Him to cover your past and create for you a new
future, with Him!
Probably most of us are in that place of having
the plate half on and half off - follow my selfish desires for the
most part - let God have His way in the areas I decide to...
Are you frustrated with where you are spiritually?
Are you looking at others and wishing you were as effective as them?
Are you wishing you were closer to God? A better Christian? Just
think of the meaning of some of the words that we openly call God
- LORD / MASTER - Is He in my life? The more He is the more your
plate will be turned on...
I know there are a bunch of you who are in that
third stage of being sold out for Christ - you probably don't realise
it because you are wanting to be even more sold out for Christ -
you are wanting to be doing more/reaching more / achieving more...
Those of us who think "I'm doing alright"
- I'm a successful Christian - I'm doing enough - are the ones who
actually aren't - being a Christian is ALL about relationship...or
it should be - the more you know God the more you want to know Him...the
more you see Him work, the more it will make your mouth water for
what else He can do... The more you get, the more you will want
Ready to do a little finger burning?
IT IS TOTALLY OVERALLY ABOUT CHOICE - you either
choose to be a victim or a champion - through the power of the Holy
Spirit, God living in you - how about we crank up the stove a bit?
